New Frontiers in Industrial Engineering

Industrial engineering is the branch of engineering that focuses on the planning, investigation, and management of production and service operations and systems. In the past, an industrial engineer was someone who worked in a factory and was responsible for ensuring that both the workers and the machines were operating as efficiently as possible. In today's world, industrial engineers are concerned not only with productivity but also with all of the technical issues that arise during production management and control. They are employed in a variety of departments within businesses, including production, distribution, transportation, trading, and customer service. Their duties range from the conception of individual operations to the management of entire production and service networks. They achieve the desired results by integrating the various aspects of the system, including the physical, financial, economic, and human components. Tasks such as production planning and control, quality control, inventory, equipment, warehouse, and material management, plant layout, and job and work station design are included in industrial engineering's scope of responsibilities.

Among the strengths of industrial engineering the following aspects can be highlighted: improved quality of both the product and the service provided to customers; increased productiveness; enhanced capacity to accomplish more with fewer resources; making job more secure, quicker, simpler, and more rewarding; assisting organizations produce more goods promptly; realising the world a safer place through the use of products with improved designs; lowering the costs that are associated with developing new technologies.

This Special Issue entitled New Frontiers in Industrial Engineering focuses on how applied research in Industrial Engineering can help businesses meet the challenges they face. Researchers are strongly encouraged to submit manuscripts that pertain to a broad topic spanning multiple disciplines: engineering of manufacturing processes; advances in composite materials and technologies; characterization, modelling and simulation of mechanical processes; robotics and computer integrated manufacturing; technology transfer; micro- and nano- technologies; maritime engineering and navigation.
